History 

Del Mar was incorporated as a city in 1959. Del Mar, the smallest city in San Diego County, was established to lure the rich searching for a beachside vacation location. As a getaway vacation destination or as a tranquil location to call home, it continues to draw celebrities, the affluent, and people of high social status.

Demographics  

It was estimated that 3,912 people (94.0 percent) were of white ethnicity, 10 were African American, eight were Native American, 118were Asian, three were Pacific Islanders, and 25 were from other races. There were 85 (2.0 percent) people of more than one ethnicity in Del Mar at the time of the census.

In addition to the horse races, the track hosts the annual county fair and assorted conventions, making for a full year of music, food, and excitement beyond the thrill of watching your horse round the last bend in the lead.
