About Inner Sunset Neighborhood

Many San Franciscans name the Inner Sunset as their favorite neighborhood, despite the fact that it suffers some of the worst weather in the entire Bay Area. Located between Golden Gate Park to the north and Vicente Street to the south, from Stanyan Boulevard to the east and 19th Avenue to the west, the Inner Sunset is just three miles from the Pacific Ocean and smack in the middle of the fog zone. Year-round, most mornings and evenings are foggy, and some days the sun doesn't come out at all.

So why do locals love it so much? Because, despite gentrification, it retains the laid-back feeling of a small town -- one that just happens to have a funky edge, an intriguing ethnic mix and great restaurants.

History of Inner Sunset Neighborhood

The origin of the "Sunset" name is not entirely clear. One claim indicates that Aurelius Buckingham, a developer who owned property in the area, coined the term in 1886. Another claim comes from the California Midwinter Exposition, held in Golden Gate Park in 1894 and also known as "The Sunset City."

Inner Sunset has a population of 62,128 people, with a median age of 38.8. Males account for 49.61 percent of the total, while females account for 50.39 percent. In Inner Sunset, US-born citizens make up 61.23 percent of the population, while non-US-born citizens make up 28.53 percent. Additionally, non-citizens make up 10.24 percent of the population.

The University of California, San Francisco's Parnassus campus and medical center, located in Inner Sunset; San Francisco State University's main campus, located in the southwestern corner of the neighborhood across from Lake Merced; Abraham Lincoln High School, located in the center of the Sunset District; and St. Ignatius College Preparatory (a private, coeducational school operating in San Francisco since 1855) located since 1969.

Restaurants, bars, breweries, book stores, bakeries, coffee shops, ice cream parlors, clothing and shoe stores, a tattoo parlor, and a wine bar may all be found in the Inner Sunset. Many of these businesses are concentrated near the junction of 9th Avenue and Irving Street.
