"This is one of the best neighborhoods in the City, if the the Bay. It is safe, friendly and full of beautiful homes." People who live here love it here. While this neighborhood is further removed from the central core of the City it still has a tight-knit feel. The streets feel broader and wider with a large numbers of 2-unit buildings that are either condos or income properties; large apartment buildings, most with garages on the street level. As you get closer to the Presidio and to Land’s End you’ll find some large, if not stunning houses. Most structures here are stucco and older and you’ll find the occasional TIC units.
Lake Street was nearly a mile beyond the city's southern edge when Minneapolis was founded in 1856. Former Canadians and Americans from the east coast dominated both the city and the street. Huge waves of Scandinavian immigrants began arriving in Minnesota in the 1870s.
Lake Street has a population of 5,374 people, with a median age of 40. Males account for 47.25 percent of the total, while females account for 52.75 percent. Non-US-born citizens make up 23.56 percent of the Lake Street resident pool, while US-born citizens make up 67.97 percent. Additionally, non-citizens make up 8.47 percent of the population.
With 3,780 residents, Lake Street is the 48th most walkable neighborhood in San Francisco. Lake Street is well-served by public transportation and is easily navigable by bicycle.
Lake Street has served as the formal boundary of various Minneapolis neighborhoods throughout history and into the late twentieth century. The stretch of Lake Street between I-35W and Hiawatha Avenue has a history of crime, prostitution, and drugs, particularly in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The street runs along the southern edge of the Phillips area, which was a hotbed of crime at the time.
Being away from it all is part of life on Lake Street where downtown San Francisco feels so far but is, in reality, only a short trip — but locals gravitate towards nearby restaurants and parks anyway, of which they have quite a selection.
Lake Street's public schools are above average.
